WORLD WAR 1 - THE GREAT WAR
We are investigating the war to end all wars. We loved using this website to help us understand the major powers involved.

We also learned a lot from watching the historical video clip. We particularly liked seeing the map of Europe and where the attacks happened.
trench warfare and the christmas truce
We were fascinated with trench warfare and we even got to experience trench life for ourselves during our visit to the WW1 Trench Experience in Cavan. It was so cool.

Can you believe the British and German soldiers apparently played a game of football during the Christmas Truce in 1914!?! Paul McCartney's song, Pipes Of Peace, shows us what the scene may have looked like at the time.

The Great Penguin Experiment - Part Deux
Which materials make the best insulators of heat?
In order to test which materials are the best insulators of heat we set up an experiment. Our equipment included:
1. 5 tins
2. tinfoil, kitchen roll, plastic, a cotton cloth and some wool
3. 5 thermometers
4. sellotape
5. a timer
6. The Great Penguin Experiment Booklet
We checked the start temperature and predicted which tin would remain the warmest. After 10 minutes we checked each thermometer and compared with our predictions. Which material do you think is the best insulator of heat?

The Great Penguin Experiment
We investigated how penguins keep warm in the harsh winter conditions of the Antarctica where temperatures can drop as low as - 40 degrees! We predicted and then conducted an experiment to find out how much warmer it is in the middle of a huddle as opposed to the outside.
Our experiment equipment included:
1. 7 tins
2. 7 thermometers
3. hot water
We filled the tins with hot water checking the starting temperature.
Then we predicted what the temperatures would be after 10 minutes and which tin would remain the warmest.
When the 10 minutes were up we checked our predictions.
Which tin do you think was the warmest in the end? Have your say below on our poll.
